The University of Birmingham underwent a major expansion in the 1960s due to the production of a masterplan by Casson, Conder and Partners of which the School of Education was part. In 1968, the Casson, Conder and Partners-designed Institute for Education was opened. The complex consisted of a group of buildings centred around an eight-storey block, containing study offices, laboratories and teaching rooms. The building has a reinforced concrete frame which is exposed internally and the external walls are of silver-grey rustic bricks. The roofs of the lecture halls, penthouse and Child Study wing are covered in copper.
