While designing the new Mechanical Engineering building, architect Allan Johnson was invited to submit sketches for an artwork to be incorporated into the facade. His original plans for a mosaic were abandoned in favour of an energetically incised relief, suggestive of mechanical forms. It was cast in glass-fibre and named: A Celebration of Engineering Sciences.
