Denys Lasdun & Partners
Bethnal Green, London
1957-59
Keeling House was the second attempt by Lasdun at a cluster block, in which a separate lift and stair tower link the towers, after the Usk Street development off the Roman Road. A vertical architectural alternative to the street Keeling House’s eccentric appearance has an attractively odd and jarring effect when glimpsed from the streets of 3 storey Victorian terraces immediately to the south. The stacked maisonettes in dark brick separated by the banding of the concrete entrance balconies are intended to emulate the East End streets. Having been allowed to run down into a state of near total dereliction Keeling House was sold to a private developer in 2000 and this early and unusual experiment in social housing is now a private, gated tower with Penthouses at the top
