Designated a new town in 1961. Skelmersdale’s road system is notable for a complete absence of traffic lights, relying instead on a series of roundabouts with extensive underpasses that allow pedestrians to move to and fro in safety. Sculptural friezes such as Cumisky’s cast in-situ using polystyrene moulds bring animation and variation to otherwise anonymous stretches of subway.
