Oxford University Zoology & Psychololgy Laboratories, designed in 1965 and completed in 1971, also known as the Tinbergen Building. This project is formed in two wings, each consisting of two parts. The primary elements are two, five storey high, service spines running perpendicular to St Cross Road. These blocks run parallel to each other, and are connected by bridges at either end. Springing at right-angles from each block are three secondary, parallel wings – or fingers – that terrace down in height (from five to three storeys) helping to reduce the scale along South Parks Road. Vertical circulation elements are expressed as towers, placed at strategic locations. Externally the complex features pre-cast and in-situ concrete, with the timber planks used in the in-situ form work clearly expressed. Reminiscent of many other works by the architect, fenestration is inserted into the envelope in ribbons. The original plan for the scheme was to build all the way from St Cross Road to Mansfield Road, but only a third of this proposed megastructure was actually constructed.
